Spy Games

During the “Cold War” between America and Russia (the CIA verses the KGB), the spy organizations were always working to find ways to infiltrate one another’s wall of secrecy.  Covert operations like the U-2 spy plane, actual spies like Julius and Ethel Rosenberg, electronic “bugs,” misinformation campaigns, and other secret plans and devices were invented (and some used) in trying to get an upper hand.

A not-so-well-known spy plan developed by the CIA was “Operation Acoustic Kitty.”  In the 1960’s there were feral cats that lived around the Russian Embassy.  A plan was developed where a cat would be equipped with a miniature microphone powered by batteries placed inside the cat’s abdomen with an antenna implanted in its tail.  The plan was for the cat to be trained to slip into the embassy and record conversations which would be transmitted to operatives nearby.

One cat was so equipped.  But when released the “acoustic kitty” spy, the cat ran into the street and was run over by a taxi.  “Operation Acoustic Kitty” was cancelled because cats were too difficult to train.  Twenty million dollars was spent on “Operation Acoustic Kitty.”

In 2 Kings 6:8-23, the king of Syria decided to make war with Israel.  But with each attempt to attack Israel, his plans were thwarted.  The king, thinking there was a spy in his house, asked his servants, “Will you not show me which of us is for the king of Israel?”  One of the servants told the king, “None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”  God was the spy in the king’s house (Pro. 15:3; Heb. 4:13).

The king of Syria decided to capture Elisha.  He sent horses, chariots and a great army to Dothan.  Elisha’s servant, seeing the great host, bemoaned, “Alas, my master! What shall we do?”.  Elisha replied, “Do not fear, for those who are with us are more than those who are with them” (2 Kgs. 6:15-16).  In fact, “the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.”  The Syrian army was struck with blindness.  They were led to Samaria where the king of Israel was told by Elisha to have mercy upon them.  The king prepared a feast for them and sent them back to Syria.  Peace followed between Israel and Syria (vs. 23).

The plots and plans of mice and men (or cats) will come to nothing without God.  “The LORD brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He makes the plans of the peoples of no effect. The counsel of the LORD stands forever, The plans of His heart to all generations.  Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD, The people He has chosen as His own inheritance” (Ps. 33:10-12).

God has not slacked off His watchful care for His people.  Christians have the promise that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5).  He is equally vigilant in spying on our enemy the devil in order to protect us from his operatives and their evil plots.

A problem that comes up is not with God’s plan, but that we are sometimes like cats, difficult to train for service in His kingdom.

Although some wondered, no evidence was found to connect the taxi driver with the KGB.
