CHANGING
THE WORLD—ONE CRADLE AT A TIME
By Debbie Kea
There are few things scarier or more joyful than the moment
your newborn baby is placed in your arms. How can you
explain to anyone how much love you feel unless they are a mother?
And how can anyone understand the fear of knowing it
is
your responsibility to raise this child for God—unless
you are a Christian parent? This knowledge causes us to look
for the right answers to life’s questions. Where
are those answers? What pattern do we turn to for guidance?
We
know there is one and only one place to go that will
always have the right answers for us as parents—God’s
Word.
Many special babies have come into this world, many that have
changed things—Thomas
Edison, Bill Gates, Jesus Christ—and now your baby—no doubt very
special! What is the old saying, “Every old crow thinks her birdie is
the blackest.” But for your child to grow up to be a special servant
in God’s kingdom, you must teach them at least these vital things:
1) There is a God, one true God, and we must follow what
He says in His Word, the Bible (2 Tim 3:16-17; John 12:48).
2) They have a soul that will live forever—somewhere
(Mt 16:26).
3) Sin is serious and has consequences (Rom 3:23; 6:23).
4) They will be disciplined. Discipline must be just and
fair, consistent, from an early age, reasonable, impartial,
enforced, and with love as its
motive. The law of obedience must be taught (Eph 6:1, 4; Proverbs 20:11;
23:13-14).
5) God loves them (John 3:16).
6) They must treat others as they want to be treated—the Golden Rule—every
day (Mt 7:12). They must think of others and not be selfish (2 Tim 3:1-5;
Phil 2: 3, 4, 21).
7) God and His kingdom must come first in their life (Mt
6:33).
8) God is great and worthy of worship (Psa. 95; 96:8; 71:5).
9) Their purpose in life is to please God and glorify Him
( Eccl. 12:13; Mt 5:16 ).
How do we go about teaching these vital things?
