Yesterday,
Today, Tomorrow
I remember yesterday. I live today. I provide for tomorrow
I remember that yesterday God made a plan to bring this world
into existence. He planned the vegetables and meat, the sun
and the rain, the day and the night. God also planned for the
prophets of yesterday to help His people plan for their tomorrows.
He called Abraham out of the land of Ur and sent him to the
land of promise. He sent Joseph into Egypt to plan for the
children of Israel's arrival. He prepared Moses to lead the
children of Israel out of Egypt across the Red Sea. In all
the yesterdays of the Old Testament we see people like Joshua
and Caleb ready to serve the Lord with all of their strength;
Debra and Ruth who were faithful in their day. David, Daniel
and Elijah, men who opposed Satan and un-righteousness, who
stood firm in the face of great opposition, and served the
God of heaven and earth with all their heart, soul and strength.
And not so long ago, yesterday, God sent his servant John
into the world to prepare the way for Immanuel. Shortly there
after came a yesterday that was like no other yesterday that
had ever been before. A day that brought a host of heaven
to earth singing "Glory to God in the highest, And on earth
peace, goodwill toward men!" (Luke 2:14). The yesterday
that Jesus Christ was born into this world.
There is a yesterday that is even greater than the day of
Jesus' birth. The religious leaders hated Jesus so much they
thought that they would just put an end to Him by killing Him.
But on the third day after His death came the greatest yesterday
of all history, the day Jesus rose out of the tomb; the day
He defeated death; the day he set mankind free from the bondage
of sin and the grave. Fifty days later, on the day of Pentecost
in Acts 2, salvation in the name of Jesus Christ began to be
preached to a lost and dying people.
Today we must not forget the yesterdays of the past. God planned
it and it is beneficial for our learning (Rom. 15:4). Today
we have a most urgent responsibility to hear Jesus and the
writers of the New Testament. "Therefore, as the Holy
Spirit says: 'Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden
your hearts as in the rebellion,..." (Heb. 3:7,8). Open
your ears to hear the good news with the fresh ears of a
child, wholly accepting, trusting and acting upon it. Read
the bible
with awe and wonder at the treasures contained there in,
treasures that were given yesterday for us today.
If we remember yesterday today it will make for a better tomorrow.
A tomorrow where there is no more disease and no more dying.
No more tears will wet the eyes. Tomorrow will bring us to
a mansion which has been prepared for us on a street of gold;
in a place which has walls of precious stones and a gate of
pearl. A place where there is no night because God our father
is ever shinning in that place. A place where the host of heaven
ever sings the wondrous choruses of joy and happiness.
God planned yesterday for your benefit today that we might
have that glorious tomorrow. "Therefore watch, and remember...And
now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His
grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance
among all those who are sanctified" (Acts 20:31,32).
Yesterday stands as a memorial today that we should ever
reach for the
great joy that awaits us tomorrow.
